Cracking the Nut on The 13 Reasons for Denial of Social Security Benefits

Remember our last post about the Top 13 Reasons Your Social Security Case Is Being Denied And What To Do To Improve Your Chances At Winning (see here)?

Now we will be going through each of the 13 reasons one by one so you can understand and hopefully minimize some of the possibilities of any of these happening to you and if they do happen, what you need to do to fix it.

Today we start with the number one reason for denials: 90% of cases are denied in the first try. What to do?

Appeal it. Do not let it go or reapply later. Time goes by and you may get approved on the next round (see below about this step) or by a judge on the third round.

A lot of people simply don’t follow through and give up after reading the “denial” letter. What you don’t know is that a lot of those letters are similar in content: they are what we call “cookie cutter” letters. They all say something like “we see that you have some limitations but we think you can do some work”. I have read denial letters that practically said “even though you are lying in a coffin we still think you can work”! (not in those words but pretty close!). So if you get a denial, don’t give up! It’s not personal. They did not specifically write that entire letter for you. They just insert some language to a “canned letter” and voila: a denial letter is done.

Realize that these are just letters that are sent to you hoping you simply accept their reasons for denial and go away. Also realize that people who have received these letters and appealed somehow have obtained benefits. Why? Because the lower level decision makers were either not qualified to make that decision or were simply dead WRONG! I even warn all my potential clients who are still in the application process that they will get denied on their first try. I tell them I hope to be wrong but that they should consider the first denial as “part of the process”. I know it shouldn’t be like that if you have enough evidence to show you have a disability but it’s just the way it is. Now you ask, as an attorney why do I accept that as the norm? Because I’m only one and you are a voter and it should be your civic right and duty to contact your congressman/woman to change that. Until then, we work we what we have.
Now, on the second run: First, note that not all States have this second step. In a lot of States once you are denied you can go straight to requesting a hearing. But if your State is one that has the reconsideration step after the first denial then you will be requesting a reconsideration (pretty obvious name for it). So where States give you that extra change at a lower level reconsideration, your chances of getting benefits increase a little more (though not a promise at all). This is a step (where available) they are more likely to send you to medical reviewers or consultative examiners who will examine you in person and will confirm what they saw on paper. They will also do a better job at looking at your medical evidence.

Other times, unfortunately, the doctor will look at you for 5 minutes, will have you hold his/her finger for a second to show you have enough strength to grip and will also have you walk down a hall on the tip of your toes to show you can still balance. The doctor will then conclude that you can sit for 6 to 8 hours a day, lift up to 20lbs occasionally which means you can do a “simple job”. Whatever that means…

Occasionally, you see claimants with mental conditions that were sent to a “physical doctor” or a claimant with a physical condition sent to a “mental doctor” for assessment. Why? I don’t know. It makes no sense to most people. They just do it. Of course, as attorneys we will use those mistakes to try to reverse these denials based on this limited examination of the claimant but sometimes that chance only happens at the hearing level when you were denied twice (see re States with that extra step) and waited many months to see a judge.

The hearing level comes after the Reconsideration period (As mentioned above, see if your State offers that step). Once you request your hearing your file will leave the “local office” and will be sent to the ODAR or the “hearing office”. Once they get your file, the hearing office will organize your electronic file however there is one MAJOR consideration when your file reaches the hearing office. While during the first (filing of the case) and second round (first appeal-if availalbe) the “local office” will order medical records from your doctors, the hearing office (after the second appeal-if available) will no longer order records. This means that it is YOUR duty to get copies of your medical records from all your doctors and send them to the hearing office.

DO NOT count on the hearing office doing that for you. A lot of people go to these hearings thinking that the hearing office ordered records from their doctors. Or worse, somehow claimants believe that because they once had some treatment but no recent treatment, these claimants believe these records on file will be enough to prove disability. Remember and memorize: no treatment equals improvement in the eyes of Social Security!! Even if you’re not better. Even if you don’t have insurance. It doesn’t matter. If you are sick and disabled and you are not treating with doctors (and I mean, Specialists in your medical impairment(s) this will be seen as “it’s not as bad because if it were you would be seeing doctors”. So pretty please. As you are seeing doctors, you need to order records from the time of disability to the time of the hearing so your file is completely up to date when you finally get your day in court.

Here’s a handy flow chart to follow so you can get the big picture of the disability process (remember: some States do not have the Reconsideration process!)

If you have questions about this process, feel free to put it in comments but you must be aware that an attorney/client relashionship is not being established, nor that this content constitutes legal advice. Also note that because the comment section is not private any information you post will be public and anyone can see it. If you have questions that you wish to keep private you can certainly consult with a local attorney.

easter dragon eggs

Easter is coming…  Are you ready for Dragons Eggs?

There are a lot different traditions about Easter. It’s a religious holiday for many people, but for commerce it’s time to sell chocolate.  Chocolate? Yes, chocolate eggs can be traditional too.

chocolate easter eggs

Take Brazil for example: one month before Easter all groceries stores are full of different varieties of chocolate eggs. Every year manufactures come up with something new and exciting like white chocolate, nuts and chocolate, dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, and the favorite eggs you can eat with a spoon!

You can fill it with nuts, fruits, and a lot chocolate, even flan or chocolate mousse. But you will need a spoon to eat it and it is for sure an amazing and fancy dessert. The tradition is to share these eggs on Easter Sunday.

A perfect moment, and a perfect excuse for the chocoholics.

But there is other old tradition about Easter: Painted eggs!

This is another creative way to celebrate Easter. Especially if you are not a big fan of chocolate or if you want to decorate the house with them.

When I was in Germany two years ago I saw eggs on trees. It reminded me of Christmas Trees. There were chocolates eggs too but not like the ones in Brazil.

This year, to celebrate Easter I decided I was going to paint eggs too.  I called them Dragon Eggs because I made them from goose eggs. I know they are not dragons but don’t geese look like dinosaurs?!

Goose eggs are probably three or four times bigger than chicken eggs. You can use your imagination and create different kinds of eggs. In this case I chose to use the same style of decorations but different colors.

If you are ready to make yours and add glitter, beads or any type of bedazzling you like. If you are out of ideas follow the pictures and you can easily see all the steps I used to make my collection.

Start by cleaning the eggs inside and out. Goose eggs are pretty hard to break so you will need to close the hole with tape and paint over it.

These eggs were painted with acrylic paint in jewel tones (here’s a good acrylic kit) but you can certainly use Easter colors like pastel pink,  blue, pink and yellow.

Giant Easter Eggs…Say what?!!

Ah Easter eggs…Memories of chocolate goodness. Every year, as long as I can remember, Easter time meant that for a whole month or so supermarkets would be filled with giant Easter eggs all over the aisles. Hanging on top, sides, bottoms, EVERYWHERE.

Amigas4all giant easter egg supermarket aisle

But what land do I speak of that would have such legendary eggs…Well, Brazil!

You ask: the land of Samba and Carnival? That’s right!

Children of all ages (that includes adults) love to get these eggs. They are magical. They come in white, dark, semi-sweet chocolate, with nuts, coconut, rice crispies and more.

These Easter eggs are hollow on the inside but filled with bonbons and other chocolate-y goodness

How can that be? And how can I get my hands on those things? In Brazil, they are pretty pricey. Imagine you can buy a 300g chocolate bar for $5 but a 300g giant egg costs about $50!

You can actually find them on Amazon cheaper than their price in Brazil:

Another thrifty option is to make them! How?

I will show you how. So gather your little ones (or big ones) and feast your eyes for we are about to make Giant Easter eggs!!!!!!

The first challenge is to find a mold. Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold 4 Lucky for me, before I moved to these lands I brought my collection of molds. These are plastic molds that I bought in a baker supply store in Brazil.

But fear not! After doing some digging I found some cool Easter Egg molds on Amazon (gotta love that site for unusual stuff like this!). Here are some more styles of molds I had on hand.

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold diamond egg

Making Easter Eggs

Before you start doing anything put the mold in the freezer. You want it very cold before the chocolate goes in.

The next thing you will need is chocolate for bakers. DO NOT use a regular chocolate bar for molding chocolate because it will stick to the mold and it will never come off.

Then decide how big or heavy you want your chocolate egg. For this tutorial I went with 6 chocolate bars (175g each). With them I can make three eggs. One of about 175g and two of about 200 or so. Break them into pieces and put them in a metal bowl.

Break them into pieces and put them in a metal bowl.

The next thing is melting the chocolate. Some people like the microwave method of melting chocolate (30s in the microwave) I prefer the water bath method.

It takes a little longer to melt but I have more control on the temperature and also more time to work the chocolate. Plus I think the final result is a shinnier chocolate.

In the water bath method you simply use a pan or baking pan to boil some water then another bowl with the chocolate goes on top of that water bath for a slow melt.

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold boiled water

When the water boils, turn it off. Wait until the steam stops rising and then put the bowl with the chocolate pieces inside the pan with water. Stir slowly avoiding any steam from landing on the chocolate.

Humm, melted chocolate!

The biggest challenge here is not eating the chocolate! HA!

Once the chocolate is melted you cAmiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold melted chocolatean get another bowl with ice in it and you can put the bowl with the melted chocolate on top of the ice so you can give it a “thermal shock”.

Stir the chocolate to cool it to the point where you put a little dab of chocolate on your lip and it feels cold but still liquid.

That’s when the magic begins! Use cutting boards or cookie sheets lined with wax paper (plastic film can work too if you don’t have anything else) as your surface. If you work directly on the board or cookie sheet you will have a tough time removing the mold once it hardens.

Shaping the Easter Eggs

Grab the molds from the freezer and put a few spoonfuls of melted chocolate inside your mold and move it around so the chocolate reaches all the surfaces inside the mold.

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold melted chocolate in bowl

You can use a spoon or a kitchen brush to spread the chocolate too. Make sure that there is enough chocolate to cover the whole surface (not too thin but also not too much that it will run down the mold).

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold melted chocolate brush

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold brush 2

Once the inside is all covered in chocolate, flip it upside down onto the baking pan or lined board.

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold flipped mold

Put the molds in the freezer right away so the chocolate hardens. Give it about 15 minutes and bring the molds out of the freezer.

Repeat the process to add another layer of chocolate.

This will make the egg thick enough not to break easily and hold whatever goodies you want to add inside.

This time wait at least 20 minutes.

De-molding the Easter Egg (is that a word?)

Bring the molds out of the freezer and only attempt to take the eggs out of the mold if you see that the chocolate is finally “unsticking” (also not a word?) out of the molds.

You’ll know this is happening because you will see the mold get lighter in color. Almost opaque. That means the chocolate is ready to pop out. See Below:

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold unsticking

See the lighter part on the bottom right of the picture? Notice the top is darker?

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold unsticking two

That means it’s not ready to pop. Only when the whole thing looks like that bottom part then you are ready to get the egg out of the mold.

Sometimes I keep them in the freezer a little longer and they will pop right out. Just be patient.

See how pretty they are?

Mold amigas4all final product

Once the Easter eggs are out of the mold you can add bonbons or bite sized chocolates or candy. The sky is the limit! Even toys are an option.

Just make sure no one chokes on them!

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold egg with bonbon

Put the two parts together and wrap them in tin foil. You can use a fancier foil with color or you can also use plastic film. The idea is to put them together so the whole thing looks like an egg (HA!)

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold egg together

I also like to add a little “pedestal” so the eggs stay up for a better and more enticing presentation. The original eggs from Brazil come with a little “plastic pedestal” to make the egg stand up but you can make your own pedestal with a paper or plastic cup.

Just cut it down in half or just enough to fit the bottom of the egg so it is stable (see pics below).

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold pedestal

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold pedestal short cup

Wrapping the Easter Eggs

The next step is to wrap the egg in cellophane or any fancy plastic wrapping you prefer.

Simply put the egg in the middle of the roll of paper and measure so you have a large square. Grab the longer ends and bring them together. Then bring in the shorter ends together making sure that the folds are neatly gathered.

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold gather corner

Amiga4all giant easter egg plastic mold wrap corners

You can use tape, string or bread ties to tie it all together.

Then add a pretty bow, curling ribbon, sisal string and voila! Giant Easter Eggs!!!!!

A Surprising Tool to Help Restore you Daily Equilibrium: …Microseconds!

Most of us are super busy. The world is super busy, and more and more things these days happen at an accelerated rate that would astonish our forebears, some even say our very molecules are speeding up, taking us as a species to the next evolution. Computers, mobile phones, instant-connectedness in real-time.

amigas4all busy lives microseconds angry princess

All very amazing, …but how do you cope, how do you set your equilibrium each day to deal with another flurry of decisions, tasks and activity, while keeping your bearings? Well that’s certainly a challenge, and not an easy one, and it’s assuredly the case that a great many of us don’t do a great job of it, and may also feel like we are treading water when it comes to keeping a healthy mental and spiritual balance and remembering what is important about why we are here and that sort of thing.

amigas4all microseconds angry princess

The point is that it’s a fast world, and it’s getting faster, so how do we keep our bearings? ………..Think microseconds! More precisely, think in microseconds. ….Ok, what the heck does that mean? To start, the principle is actually not a new one; ancient text in Hinduism tells us of spiritual ‘Enlightenment’ (‘Nirvana’ in Buddhism) that people often spend years or a lifetime trying to achieve, and goes into quite a bit of detail on instructing us toward surmounting the many obstacles to achieving an ‘enlightened’ state, yet these kind of teachings also have told us in a nutshell that enlightenment is actually attainable in the blink of an eye; in other words, the requisite state of mind for achieving it is already there if we would just recognize and embrace it [Eastern religion enthusiasts, don’t skewer me here, I’m referencing a general concept].

Thus we have then some historical perspective to ‘thinking in microseconds’, ….but what else? Well here’s one example: It seems there are a few moments when we first awaken to each new day, and unless you’re snapping-to each morning to a bugle in the barracks with Sarge yelling at you to assemble, you probably have at least a couple of minutes after hitting the snooze button on your alarm where you are just lying there.

amigas4all microseconds my beach angry princessSo there you are, and you’re probably fresh off your dream thoughts, that state of mind (some call it the ‘hypnagogic state’), whatever you call it, where the weight of the coming day has not yet hit you. ……Reserve that couple of minutes for yourself; whatever crap may be coming your way that day and even in the next couple of minutes, claim that first minute or so for yourself, and identify at least that microsecond or instant, for one thing because maybe an instant is as long as it lasts for you on that morning, wherein you have a flash of remembrance of yourself and your purpose, and what’s truly important, even if that realization is quickly inundated by the waves of responsibility that are about to wash over you; but realize that even that daily swift fading of your inspiration tells you something remarkable; the very fact that you do feel frustrated that ‘nirvana’ this morning was seemingly just another transient flash, means that you do have that awareness of what is real and you are still striving for it deep down; that it’s absence is at all troubling to you, is actually a good sign.

But how do you capture more of it? … Well that’s a mystery of life and one of the challenges of your being here and seemingly alamigas4all microseconds capture the moment angry princessso a growing challenge for us as a species, and there should be satisfaction in your knowing that you are trying to work that out, and that with practice will probably get better at it. There are other moments in the day or week that will also undoubtably be inspiring, after all hope springs eternal. But also reflect on this, because it really is remarkable: by being here, you are a warrior in a remarkable time in our evolution, …we all are: there is a quickening, and I think we all sense it on some level, there are clues that time-space as we perceive it may be changing, we are all experiencing it, it’s ‘in our face’ so to speak in this dizzily accelerating world, some say we are evolving toward a different perception of time, and ‘time’ has been a concept which for eons has been perceived by the greatest spiritual and scientific minds as involving some level of illusion vis a vis our limited perception.

The microsecoamigas4all peace microseconds angry princessnd (‘the instant’) is maybe the smallest measure of our sense of the time-line. Remember that the concept of “In the blink of an eye” conveys to us that the goal was always there or is instantly attainable, all of which seems to shortcut your laborious progression along a time-line toward that goal. So when you capture that instant as you lay there each morning, I believe maybe you have captured much more: a step or steps toward the ‘timelessness’, that, beyond just delivering us from our frenetic selves, may be instrumental in embracing our evolving selves.

Angry Princess, out!

Bar Decorating Part 3-Bar Stools!

The bar decorating continues with more updates to these rustic bar stools a friend found on Craigslist.

Bar stool redo amigas4all amigas4all, bar redo, chair, rustic stool, rustic chair, bar decor, burlap

I showed you in part 2 what I did to bring these bar stools back to life by cleaning them up and staining them in a light color just to give them some “hydration”.

Today, I will show you how I made my bar stools more comfy and how added stenciled letters to give them some personality! Follow me in this new and exciting chapter of my bar decorating saga (it all started with the first chapter with my bar decorating post).

Personalizing the Bar Stools

This post contains affiliate links. I may make a commission from any purchases you make through these links without any extra cost to you. This is how I make sure my foster birds have a home until they find their forever family

Now that the bar stools were breathing again, I decided to hide some of the imperfections I mentioned on part Deux like the warped seat for example (see below).

bar stools redo amigas4all

To do that I decided that cushions would do the trick. I could also tell that these chairs were pretty hard to sit for a  long time.

We all know that if the game is on it can take a long, looong time to end (yes, the hubs complained also about the hard seats!). So, I figured I needed to make them a little more comfy.

At first, I thought about buying “ready made” cushions from my usual “decorating on a budget stores”. I reaaally wanted these cushions I found on Amazon.

cushions

They were comfy and the right color. And I could still personalize them.

Unfortunately, my bar stools were too weird of a size and nothing fit. Sniff!

The seats are pretty wide and all the cushions I found for purchase were two inches too short in every direction. I thought if I used smaller cushions they would look goofy. So buying was out and I was going to make the cushions myself.

Deciding the materials for the project

When I decided to make cushions I realized that making individual removable cushions would take too much fabric because of the size of the seats. The easiest and cheapest way to do this was to just upholster the seat instead.

Since I wanted to give it a rustic look I thought burlap would do the trick. Burlap is cheap and very versatile (You can get a good quality burlap here for a fraction of the cost).

The other thing I wanted to do was personalize it and make it look like old coffee bags. Let’s get this party started!

materials you will need for the cushions:

How to upholster The Cushions

I started with foam cut to size.

amigas4all, bar redo, chair, rustic stool, rustic chair, bar decor, burlap, foam

(notice I had to add more foam to make it the size of the chair-I used what I had a home).

Then I cut the burlap with enough material left to cover the foam on the top, sides and under. Once the burlap was lined up, I stapled it to the underside of the chair.

bar stools redo amigas4all

Be careful with the corners! They can be a little tricky to fold and staple. But if you are old school like me I am sure you covered your school books with paper to protect them. So you will know what to do with the corners.

Or if you never did that you can just fold them carefully like an envelope or a “V”. Staple them firmly so they don’t pop out or look bunched up.

amigas4all bar redo rustic bar stools bar decorating corner

It’s not the best picture but you get the idea.

So now that all 4 chairs are “burlapped TM”, it was time to give them a little more personality.

Since I used new burlap I needed to make them look a little more “used”. Or better yet, I wanted them to look like discarded coffee bags!

Of course, because us DIYers fell in love with the whole rustic “everything” these coffee bags have gone up in price. A lot! I have seen coffee bags as high as $50 a piece!!

Luckily if you go to Amazon they have a good selection of decently priced coffee bags for you. Unfortunately, because of my weirdly sized chairs, I needed everything custom sized.  So I had to make my own “faux” coffee bags. It’s all right. I like a challenge like that anyway.

materials to MAke the “faux” coffee bag

It was actually easy. All you will need is burlap and paint! Ok, you need a few more things but here is the list:

As for the colors, since I’m going for the coffee bag look I thought I would use blacks, blues, reds and greens.

The trick to getting the “coffee bag look” right

The colors in these coffee bags tend to be bold colors. But they have to look worn too so you need to go easy on the amount of paint or they won’t look right. Like these, for example:

amazon coffee bags

Make sure when you paint that you grab just a little bit of paint first with your sponge. Then use a plastic lid or another surface to tap on your sponge before applying it on to the stencil.

You can use ready made stencils or even print letters and other designs online. You can also create your own stencil. It all depends on the look you want and if you have the time to cut each letter (that’s a lot of work!).

I chose a ready made stencil and used the letters and the cut outs to create more letters and design different logos for my “coffee bags” like the ones below:

amigas4all, bar redo, chair, rustic stool, rustic chair, bar decor, burlap, stencil

amigas4all, bar redo, chair, rustic stool, rustic chair, bar decor, burlap, bar stools amigas4all, bar redo, bar stool, bar decor, rustic chair, rustic stool, bar stools

Wrapping it up! Pun Intended!

For an extra special touch of Mexican Flair (the theme of my home bar), I wrapped these Mexican scarves to the back of the bar stools (see below). I saw something similar done in a restaurant in Cabo San Lucas (my favorite place in the world!) and I wanted it for my own bar.

It was so cool to bring a little piece of paradise into my home!

amigas4 all, bar redo, stool, rustic stool, chair, bar chair, bar stools

And here are all my “pretties” together, singing in harmony!

amigas5all, bar redo, stool, rustic stools, bar stools, bar chair redo

You can certainly create even more designs and use different style stencils. For my bar I wanted them rustic, “beat-up” and “worn”. I think it’s pretty close.

And yes, I know none of them have coffee written on them but you get the idea. Aren’t these chairs the coolest?! I hope you liked them.

Join me in the next episode of the bar decorating saga. I will show you how I transformed some run-of the-mill bar stools into more seating for the bar. And without taking too much space.

You will use the same concepts we learned today (yes, more stools! and yes, it will be worth it!) .

Cheers!!

Decorate a Bar With Primitive Mexican Painting DIY and Save a Bundle!

I love Primitive Mexican Painting. But they cost a lot of money. Even in non-touristy areas, it is hard to find a Primitive Mexican Painting that will not break the bank. At least in my book.

So I decided I was going to DIY my Primitive Mexican Painting! Or Paintings, since I can’t just have one!

But before we get into that I will tell you a little bit about the research that went into finding the art I wanted to make.

The research (ahem, “shopping”)

Way too much since I wanted to add several in the bar I’m decorating with a Mexican/Day-of-the-Dead theme. I sure didn’t want to pay that much.

So I decided to use some of these ideas to create my own art. And you can certainly get inspired and try your own style.

You may even free hand it if you have the skills I sure don’t have! While I can do a little bit of everything in life I was never a painter. But this one is actually is easy even for the paint-challenged like me.

So first, start your research on the images you like to try. If you have traveled somewhere exotic you can also use those images. We will talk about the transfer process in the next post (but here is the link if you want to start now).

How to Care for a Pet Bird

Caring for a new pet bird is a challenge! When bringing a bird home (by bird I mean a parrot) one must consider several things before doing so.

First and most important, you need to know that unlike a dog or a cat, parrots in general will live for a long time. The average lifespan for a parrot ranges from 30 up to 80 years old. There are stories of birds living even longer than that in captivity.

Age Matters when caring for a pet bird

With that in mind you need to consider how old you are, how old your kids are and possible changes in your life that may make you reconsider getting a bird in the first place.

Of course, age per se is not a problem unless you are 80 and in bad health and is now getting a baby bird which very clearly may outlive you. You should consider: “Who’s going to take care of it should something happen to me?”.

A lot of my rescues come from families whose parents died or were involved in accidents and the children (even adults) were not able to take care of the bird(s).

If you ever heard of the term “trust fund babies”, you should think about talking to your estate planning attorney or if you don’t have the means, at least consider talking to your family about what to do if something happens.

Maybe even contact a rescue willing to accept the bird and instruct the family about contacting them if something happens. That way everybody can rest assured that your pet bird will have a place to go.

Lifestyle and your pet bird

corky and dog amigas4all, bird care, pet care, rescue, animal rescue, bird rescue, pet birdSecond thing to consider is your lifestyle. Do you travel a lot for work? Are you retired and trying to “see the world”?

One thing is to take a vacation here and there but what if you are constantly traveling for work?

Do you think it’s fair for the bird to be locked up in a cage and being cared for by someone else? Is that someone experienced?

Is Your pet bird safe?

Third, is your house safe for a bird? Do you have cats? Dogs? Reptiles? Are you still cooking with nonstick pans? Do you like to light scented candles (or those outlet scented ones)? Do you smoke (even if outside)?

All of these items should be considered. While not all cats or dogs are dangerous for birds, you still need to supervise their interactions. Those cute videos you see online of dogs or cats interacting with birds are the exception, not the rule.

Especially the ones with dogs sleeping near the bird or cats roughhousing with the birds. First, despite what you heard cats are not the most dangerous for birds.

Except if a cat scratches a pet bird it may die within 2 hours.

So ALWAYS supervise. Dogs are the ones that are most dangerous to birds. Especially, bird dogs. Yes! your nice Golden Retriever may be one of them. But there are other breeds that can be dangerous to birds too.

Always research and always supervise. If you know your dog cannot be trusted with the bird but you still want a bird, always keep the bird locked safely in a good sized cage when you are not around.

Sometimes even lock the bird cage in a separate room. Seems pretty obvious to say this but you would be surprised how many injuries occur to birds because people trust their animals too much. You just never know.

Interacting with your pet bird

Ideally, you do not want to breed the birds but most females do well with other females (they are also sweeter) but males can be buddies too.

If you do have the time, play time and just hanging out will make most birds happy. They also don’t mind stealing food from your plate.

Just make sure they are eating safe and healthy things (no chocolate, chips, fried stuff, avocados or coffee). There are other plants and food that are unsafe. Also most fruit seeds can be dangerous (especially apple, cherry, pear, among others).

When in doubt, research

Well, these are a few things to think about. This post was not meant to discourage anyone from getting a bird, just to make sure that you think hard before you get one.

They are a lot of fun if you spend time with them, but they do take some work too. Not only noise, cleaning and attention. Oh and don’t forget, a lot of people don’t know this but there are a lot of bird rescues out there and they are full of very good birds for adoption.

Some require a class (which is excellent to learn a few things about bird care-believe me-the more I know, the less I know) I learn new things everyday and I have been doing bird rescues for years!.amigas4all, bird care, pet care, rescue, animal rescue, bird rescue

Other rescues will require you to volunteer in exchange for the bird. That way they learn if you will do well with the bird of your choice and also bird care in general.

Sadly, others will just take your money and will say that any bird that sat on your hand is the perfect bird for you. Be careful!

In the next post I will talk a little more about rescues and my experience with them. Always remember: Don’t buy. Adopt!!!!

Feel free to ask me anything you need to know about bird care. Whether you own a bird or you are thinking about getting one.

Angry Princess talks Mondays (King James version)

Looking upon the deeds of the men and women, his creations, God was displeased, and spoke unto them: “Even as the sun sets upon the revelry of thy “weekend” there shall arise in the east the grim spectre of Monday, and assuredly shalt thou know hardship and pain, and to your labors thou shalt wander in dread and despair.” ….and lo, above the din of vehicular traffic, upon the highways and biways, was heard among the people a great lamentation and a gnashing of teeth.   Then God looked with pity upon His people, and ever a merciful God, He declared: “So that thou may find solace and hope throughout the darkest winter, and so that all shalt know that I am the Lord, I grant unto thee “Monday Night Football.”   Then the heart of each man was lifted thereby and knew gladness.  But in this selfsame hour arose a mournful discord, bourne upon the wind even unto the heavens, as the women with a single voice cried: “….Lord how have we have offended thee that thou dost increase our suffering?”
